Quck Final Impressions: 3D Dot Game Heroes

This was a very enjoyable game and I did like it but it wasn’t really what I was hoping for, as I thought it would be a love letter to retro games spanning multiple genres.  I really don’t have much to say about it other than it’s both a very fun game and a very pretty game.  If you’ve played The Legend of Zelda, Neutopia, Golden Axe Warrior, or Beyond Oasis, you know what type of game you’re getting into.  If you like any of those games, I would be very surprised if you didn’t enjoy 3D Dot Game Heroes.

It plays a lot like the top-down Zelda games, but your sword swings in a 90 degree arc instead of stabbing forward.  This makes the gameplay a little different as you’ll find yourself dodging and attacking enemies differently than you would in a Zelda game since you often find yourself standing diagonally from them to both attack and dodge.  The swords also level up at a blacksmith when you pay enough money and some have special abilities which can make them more useful.  Then there are others that are just ridiculous and are fun to play with because they’re humorous to wield.  You can also create 3D pixel art, a function that is quite fun to play with, and then use that as your character throughout the game.  So you can do things like play the game as a sword wielding toaster instead of the traditional warrior/hero.  This is a PS3 exclusive worth giving a try if you're a PS3 owner who enjoys retro games.
